And this is when I gush just a teency bit about how much I love Girlin a Coma. I have this special place in my heart for these San Antonio chicas! They have been a pretty successful band for a long time now- touring and playing shows all over the place. And they were signed by Joan Jett. And toured with Morrissey. And the music! I don’t mean to be so boastful but I’m proud of my Texas peeps! Perhaps I am overly arrogant on their behalf :) They, on the other hand, are very humble. I was lucky enough to get these questions answered by Phanie….
Tell me about your latest album, Exits and All the Rest, and how working with Joan Jett has influenced you.
Our new album was recorded in Austin, TX with Mike McCarthy. It was our first time using analog recording. We were going through a lot of change and growth during the recording process so the record has a darker tone to it.Joan has been great. She’s always encouraged us to enjoy our moment while we are in it. We always take the time too.
You have been a band since you were kids! Have you thought about what you would be doing if you weren’t creating music?
I think Nina and myself ( Phanie) would be in school still doing something music related. Jenn has always wanted to have her own business.
Do you feel like you have to fight some sort of stigma or work harder just because you’re an all girl band?
I would say so, yea. Not only are we an all girl band but we are also Latinas with two gay members. Immediately that opens the band up to be pigeonholed. People expect all girl bands to sound a certain way and I’m not sure why. We usually get the whole, “I’m not in to all girl bands but I like yours,” comment. Why can’t we just be a band?
What is your favorite song to perform live and why?
I would [say] Sly is my favorite right now. It always changes, though. I love the emotion behind it and using my mallets :)
Who are you looking forward to watching perform at Summer Fest 2012?
On our day we get to see Willie Nelson and the Descendents. So excited!
See Girl in a Coma perform live at Summerfest
