The Bull Thieves will be truckin it on down to Houston to grace the stage at Free Press Summerfest 2010. All the way from Brooklyn, New York these guys are ready to visit Houston, their original home. Check them out….

1. Who are your musical influences and what effects have they had on your own music?

Every record I’ve owned over the past 25 years. Early records that I listened to over and over again because I just didn’t have as many records to which I could listen. Early Public Image, old U2, lots of old school hip hop. I’ve always been on again and off again with hip hop but Fat Boys and Kurtis Blow were some of the earliest records I owned and I’ve played drums for 20 years so I think that’s bound to have found its way into the way I make beats.

2. How did you guys meet?

I wish there was a good story there but we’re really just friends of friends. All three of us lived in Houston, and two of us in Galveston for a lot of years, but we didn’t all three meet until we were here in New York City. Witnes, the DJ from Houston who now lives in Florida, brought Nicholas and I together with Task.

3. What is your method when creating new music?

I think our only method is experimentation. The songs come all kinds of ways; I think really the only common thread in the creative process from song to song is our tendency to try every idea out a few different ways. Like – what if we did it this way instead of this way? And the final song sometimes, often, sounds entirely different from the original idea. In a good way.

4. How do you hope to impact the Houston audience?

I have no idea how it will go over. I find it funny that we’re playing right after D.R.U.M. and we have no drummer. But the beats are all slowed down and are heavily influenced by DJ Screw, so I think there’s a lot of Houston in the sound. Can’t deny where you came from.

5. Who are you looking forward to watching perform at Summerfest 2010?

Grandfather Child, Black Congress, The Energy – lots of bands that have formed or developed since I left Houston, and folks I played music with for years. Always interesting to see folks you’ve played with before doing new things, and seeing how they’ve developed as musicians, what new things they’re either trying out or have worked into their playing. Chris Ryan, Roy Mata, Ryan Chavez, Lucas Gorham – all people I’ve played with and am looking forward to seeing play again.
